Author : Ashin Merlin Jacob1 , Anjali Kaushik |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :Students are considered as the most potential unit of future human resources in a country like ours, which
relies greatly on its human resources strength. Hostel is a place where usually students live in a supervised
environment. Students come from distant places to earn their degree. Hostel life has a great impact on
the academic achievement and health status of the students. However, day scholars live with their parents
and do not come across issues such as unappetizing food, hostel ragging and home sickness, but they
surely do envy the freedom and independence of their hostel buddies. The objectives of the study were
to assess the health status and academic progress among day scholars and hostellers and to compare the
health status and academic progress among day scholars and hostellers. A quantitative research approach
was adopted using comparative survey design. There were 50 students who were divided into hostellers
(n1
=25) and day scholars (n2
=25). A self-report rating scale to assess the health status and academic
progress was used for data collection. Result reveals that 100% day scholars are good in their health
status whereas 92% hostellers are good and 8% are moderate in their health status and also reveals that
84% hostellers are good and 16% are moderate in their academic progress whereas 80% day scholars are
good and 20% are moderate in their academic progress. Through this research study, we have found out
that those students staying at home have better health status because of the parental care, healthy food
and safe drinking water, whereas those students staying in the hostel have good academic progress due
to less time of travel, participation in group study and help from other fellow hostel mates. Therefore,
nursing administrations should provide students with good health education, guidance and counselling
to help them in time management and cope with stressors in nursing colleges. |

Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :Background: Unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) including Human
Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infections are amongst the top public health priorities in India. Around
1/4th of births are unwanted. Condom, a dual-protective device, is being promoted for meeting these
challenges. The objective of the study was to assess the impact of condom demonstration on knowledge,
attitude and incidences of factual errors among sexually active men of attended family planning & STI
clinics, of PGIMER, Chandigarh.
Methods: A quasi-experimental study was conducted on 102 men; mean age of the group 29.23±3.5 ranged
from 20–41 years. The samples were randomly divided into two groups. Data was collected between July
and September, 2016.
Results: Although the men had heard of and/or knew about the purpose of condoms, 58.8% were adequately
informed. 86.3% subjects had positive attitude towards condom use (p 0.005). 56.9% subjects reported
errors (breakage, slippage, or both) while use. Immediate correct practice was significantly representative
as 70.6% subjects of experimental and four (7.8%) subjects of the control group performed seven or more
correct steps on specific condom application and removal. However, 29.4% subjects of the control group
and 94.1% experimental group had successfully pinched the reservoir tip during condom application
(p 0.003). 90.2% participants had easy access to condom while 78.4% were used. The study confirmed
that knowledge is not enough to bring desired change in practices. Regarding access to condoms, it
was observed that >90.2% subjects had easy access while 78.4% had used condoms. The results depict
that after three months of usage there has been a reduction in incidence of factual errors in case 11.7%
compared to control 17.6%.
Conclusion: The current study shows that the majority of subjects (90%) who knew about condom had
never attended condom demonstration before. Hence, the educative session regarding practices must be
considered in the promotional strategies to get best out of this dual-protection method. |

Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :Postpartum is the time after birth, a time in which the mother’s body, including hormone levels and
uterus size, returns to a non-pregnant state. The purpose of the study was to develop and evaluate
postograph for the healthcare professionals. The study has been carried out in different phases: (1).
Preliminary preparation of postograph, (2). Validation of postograph through modified Delphi technique,
(3). Pilot study (n=20), to assess the feasibility of postograph and pre-test the scale for the language and
sequence of items. After this phase, final try out of postograph (n=220), validity (content validity, face
validity, construct validity) of postograph through exploratory factor analysis was done. For assessing
quality and adequacy of postograph, reliability was done. For internal consistency, Cronbach alpha was
used, for stability test retest (r=0.95) was done. Postograph consists of 51 items and it is divided into two
domains. Content validity of the postograph was checked by calculating CVI (content validity index). The
value of CVI was 0.98. Construct validity was done through exploratory factors analysis. Cronbach’s alpha
was used for internal consistency; the overall Cronbach’s alpha of present scale is 0.98. Hence, a valid
and reliable postograph is developed for the healthcare professionals to evaluate condition of mother
and newborn during postnatal period. |

Trataka Exercise – Improving Vision and Memory |
Author : Soumya Kurup1 , Manju Chhugani2 , Eke Lama Tamang3 |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :Trataka is a method of meditation that involves staring at a single point such as a small object, black dot
or candle flame. It is said to bring energy to the “third eye” and promote various psychic abilities. Trataka
is of two kinds: internal and external. Internal trataka is called dharana or concentration because in this
practice the eyes are closed and the mind concentrated upon some subtle element within. External
trataka means fixing the eyes on some object outside. The word trataka means to gaze steadily. Trataka is
gazing without blinking at an object placed directly in front of the eyes. At the time of practicing trataka,
the eyeballs should remain steady and the eyelids should not flicker. No object except the one on which
trataka is to be performed should be seen, and the mind should not wander hither and thither but be
merged in observation of the object. The sadhana of trataka will help a great deal in understanding the
mind and making its unseen powers active, so as to prepare for self-realization. |
